Project acronym: ONSITE
Project full title: Operation of a Novel Sofc-battery Integrated hybrid for Telecommunication Energy systems

The overall objective of ONSITE is the development of a proof-of-concept based on SOFC/ZEBRA batteries hybrid technology with progress beyond state-of-the-art and towards the telecom market requirements.
Each separate subsystem, developed as a part of the final hybrid system, has its own set of objectives that is simulated and optimized for the Proof of Concept system objectives, to reach:
- longest possible lifetime,
- high system efficiency over the whole lifetime,
- high reliability (uptime),
- limited cost for operation and maintenance,
- competitiveness in terms of investment costs compared with conventional technologies.

Additionally, investigations will be carried out on the feasibility of combining the SOFC/ZEBRA  system with a heat pump, to discover the potential to boost the efficiency to a higher level and supply cooling as well.

The outcome of this project will enable the consortium to demonstrate a concept fulfilling telecom market requirements and will enable the partnership (primarily HTceramix as SOFC developer, FIAMM as system integrator, and Ericsson as OEM) to move to the next steps (industrialization & market) of field test readiness, together with a scale up in production and cost optimization.

The results and achievements will be disseminated by various means.
Further major objectives of the project are listed below.

  • Improvement of SOFC stack design
  • Optimization of a multi-stack system topology to develop a high power SOFC system
  • Design of a complete SOFC/ZEBRA high power system operating as a whole (i.e. including balance of plant, control system) capable of matching the varying power demands of a medium size TLC station ( > 20 kW, 0-100% modulation capability, cost reduction, etc.).
  • Integration of SOFC, ZEBRA battery pack and other balance of plant components into an application under challenging constraints, including limited volume, and stringent safety requirements and CE certification.
  • Repeated tests both in the lab and in field testing & trial of SOFC/ZEBRA performance to improve the understanding of degradation mechanisms, which will result in measures to reduce performance degradation.
  • Investigation of spin-off opportunities into other market sectors, especially Smart Grid, Smart Building and Rural electrification
  • Dissemination of information via a regularly updated website as well as publications and presentations at relevant conferences
  • Development of exploitation routes for bringing the new technology to market
  • Strengthening of the European position in this technological field.
